Since its launch a year and a half ago, KudaCan has proved to be a vital resource for children and families living in and around Bishopston.
The friendly play cafe is run by childcare professionals and offers educational play equipment for babies and children aged 0 – 4, a host of workshops and classes, plus KudaClub, an after-school club for children aged 4 – 11. KudaCan now also boasts its very own bouncy castle!
However, exciting plans abound and Pegah, the owner and manager of KudaCan, will also be launching a Breakfast Club at KudaCan this September!
I wanted to catch up with Pegah to hear more about the after-school and breakfast clubs as well as all her other exciting plans in store for children living in and around Bishopston.
Hi Pegah, how is life at KudaCan?
Life at KudaCan is pretty great! KudaCan has evolved so much since we opened almost a year and a half ago and the improvements we have made have gone down really well with the folks that visit.
I hear that there have been some exciting developments at KudaCan recently?
Yes, we are so thrilled to announce that we are now Ofsted registered! This opens up a whole new world of services we can provide for the parenting community. We have great plans to develop and extend our existing out-of-school care facility, KudaClub.
Please can you tell me a bit about the KudaCan After-School Club?
KudaClub runs on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays for children in Reception to Year 6. We collect children from Bishop Road and Ashley Down Schools at the end of the school day and look after them until their parents collect them at 5.30pm.
How do children get collected from school and taken back to KudaCan safely?
The safety of the children is our biggest priority, it has to be. So we have our own snazzy high visibility vests that the children and play workers wear at all times when not on the KudaClub premises. Ours have KudaCan written on the back so we can be easily identified in the playground and when walking to and from school.
What activities are on offer at the KudaClub?
Gosh, lots! Our after-school setting is about listening to the children and adapting the activities to their needs. We have a whole walk-in cupboard full of resources including games, books and arts & craft supplies. Being members of BAND we can also access their never-ending resources to keep things fresh, new and exciting.
Some children want quiet time and we respect that, some still have lots of energy they want to burn off so we organise more high energy activities for them. On good weather days, we go to St Andrew’s Park where the children can take part in larger group games if they wish not to mention getting their daily dose of vitamin D!
Are there any snacks and drinks on offer for the after-school kids?
Yes, we offer the children a snack and refreshments as they arrive at KudaCan to get their energy levels up so they can really make the most of their time with us. We believe the evening meal with the whole family is an important time to talk and share experiences so we make sure the children still have an appetite to enjoy that time with their families.
Please tell me a bit about the KudaClub staff who will be assisting with the after-school club.
We are very lucky to have fantastic team, a close team who have a real passion for children. They are all highly qualified, experienced childcare professionals with a wide range of experience to offer great experiences for all children including those with special needs.
I hear that you have exciting news about offering a KudaCan Breakfast Club in the future!?
That’s right. From September 2014 we will be offering Breakfast Club on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays from 8am until the start of school. Children can be dropped off at KudaCan, we will offer them breakfast and then we’ll walk them to Bishop Road and Ashley Down Schools. As with the after-school club, it’s a chance to meet with and make friends with children from another school but also from different classes at their own school. You can never have too many friends!
Do you have any other exciting plans up your sleeve for KudaCan?
Always! We’re going to run holiday Club this August for children in Reception to Year 6. This will be an all day club from 8am – 5.30pm running on 11th, 12th and 13th August and will include a variety of activities to keep the children entertained and occupied.
But for details of all our other exciting plans, you’ll just have to wait and see!
That all sounds great. How do parents register their children?
We like to keep things as simple as possible so registering couldn’t be easier. Parents just need to get in touch. We’ll chat things through and give them a Family Information Pack. It contains everything the parents need to know along with the registration forms that they just have to fill in and pop back to us.
Anything else that you would like to add?
We are now taking registrations for both Breakfast and After School KudaClub to start this September, as well as for Holiday Club. For more information, email firstname.lastname@example.org, call 0117 9422877, take a look at our website www.kudacan.co.uk or pop in for a friendly chat.
