What’s on in May 2016 for Children & Families in Bishopston, Horfield, St Andrew’s & Ashley Down

May 2016 has some great events and activities for children and families in Bishopston, Horfield, St Andrew’s and Ashley Down!

In fact, there are so many special events this month that I thought they deserved a whole post about them, so here’s the May line-up…

MONDAY 2nd MAY

Redland May Fair 

maypole-771283_960_720This year it will be Redland May Fair’s 40th anniversary and there is lots of fun on offer for children and families from 1- 5pm on Redland Green.

There will be Maypole dancing, Fez the Jester, two storytelling sessions, a range of live music and performances, Pirate puppet show, magic show, stalls and much more!

SATURDAY 7th MAY

Glos Rd Central Mayfest

MayfestA free annual event for all of the community to enjoy on Gloucester Road which starts at 10am and ends at 5pm.

There will be creative activities for children, live music, singing, delicious food and drink, special sales and you can also visit the Eco House on Bishop Lane.

Plus, watch out for Jack in the Green who will be making his way up Gloucester Road around 3.30pm with his band of merry musicians too!

Jack in the Green

d4472-jackinthegreen4Today Jack in the Green will be making his annual procession up Gloucester Road where he will end up on Horfield Common and seeing him is a must if you have kids!

In case you didn’t know, jack is a 9 foot figure, covered in leaves and greenery and who is always accompanied by his band of merry musicians. He starts his journey at 10.30am at M Shed and then carries on up through Bristol before ending up on Horfield Common at about 4pm where he must die so as to release the spirit of Summer.

Spring Fair at Golden Hill Community Garden

13096269_1160497890636571_8790683852575105746_nThe wonderful Golden Hill Community Garden holds its annual Spring Fair today from 1 – 4pm.

Activities will include face painting, pizza making, kids’ crafts such as Spring crown making and clay modelling, live music, the Incredible Human Jukebox, plant sale, yummy cakes and much more.

The entry fee will be £1 for adults and children go free.

Spring Celebration at St Werburgh’s City Farm

13077117_1602543690064345_1882411398_nThe annual Spring celebration at the farm which starts at 12 noon and ends at 5pm. Activities will include music, crafts, dancing, food and more.

Entry will be £3 for adults and £1 for children.

SUNDAY 8th MAY

Mr Gotalot’s Gotalot Shop: The Great British Cheese Off

Monkey Trousers Theatre 18 27 04 (1)Some great theatre fun for children and families at the Kelvin Players Studio with the fabulous Monkey Trousers Theatre and their newest show, Mr Gotalot’s Gotalot Shop: The Great British Cheese Off.

Performances will be at 10.30am, 1pm and 3.30 and tickets are £7 each for aged 3 and above (babies on laps are free) or £25 for a family of four.

MONDAY 9th MAY

Bat Walk: Horfield Common

bat-1143405_960_720A Bat Walk taking place from 8 – 9.30pm which will give you and your kids the chance to find out more about the resident bats on Horfield Common!

Learn about the behaviours, habits, likes and dislikes of bats and then get hands-on with a bat detector and track different bat species across the common.

Tickets are £8 each and places are limited – you can book tickets here.

TUESDAY 31st MAY

Walk on the Wildside at Horfield Common

Half-term nature activities for children of all ages with naturalist, Steve England which is from 10am – 12 noon.

This event gives children and young people the opportunity to explore Horfield Common and find out more about the nature and wildlife that abounds through interactive nature activities such as bug hunting and pond dipping.

It is £3 per child and you can book tickets here.
