Wassail at Horfield Organic Community Orchard: Saturday 13th January

On Saturday 13th January all are invited to a Wassail at Horfield Organic Community Orchard, an ancient English ceremony held in deepest, darkest Winter.

A Wassail involves toasting and celebrating fruit trees in the hope of encouraging an abundance of fruit at Harvest time.

The ceremony begins with children and adults making lots of noise by banging sticks and clapping hands to ‘wake’ the trees from Winter’s icy spell. Then, cups of cider are thrown around a tree to toast it.

Children are encouraged to bring ribbons, clouties and shining things to decorate the trees!

The Pigsty Morris Dancers will be making merry in their costumes of green ribbons and with their white handkerchiefs and wooden batons.

To warm you at this Winter ceremony will be delicious homemade cakes and mulled apple juice for sale.

The Wassail will take place from 2 – 4pm.  To find Horfield Organic Community Orchard, go down Gaston Lane which is beside 134 Longmead Avenue until you reach the last gate on your left.

Or, you can find Gaston Lane besides 22 Kings Drive, turning left and taking the first gate on the right.
