Today’s post on Bishopston Mum is a local mum’s review of Music With Mummy: weekly music and movement classes for young children aged 15 months – 3 years at the Quaker Meeting House at 300 Gloucester Road, Horfield.

Music With Mummy classes are run by Nikki Reeves and are on Mondays, Tuesdays and Fridays in term-time. Nikki also runs Jolly Babies classes which are for young children aged 0 – 15 months.

How old is your little one and how long have you been going to Music With Mummy classes?

He is 20 months. We have been going for 2 terms.

Please describe a typical session and the activities and props used?

Each term there is a different theme e.g. colours, transport. I will use transport as an example. Each week, we learn a new song about different modes of transport, eg car, bus, bike etc.

Each week as well as learning a new song, we sing the songs that we have accumulated.

Props for the transport sessions have included bike handlebars with bells, cardboard steering wheels, cones etc.

We also have a time each week when the children play instruments and are encouraged to stop when the music stops. They also play fast and slow.

The introduction to the class is always the same format with a welcome song and the children going around saying hello to the other children. The end of the session ends with a goodbye song. There is also a section where we lie down and listen to music.

What is Nikki like and what are classes like with her leading them?

Extremely warm, friendly and enthusiastic. She is smiley and great with the children. The classes are very happy.

Is it a friendly class or did it take a while to get to know other parents/carers?

Very friendly and welcoming.

What is your little one’s favourite parts of this class?

He enjoys playing the instruments and ‘dancing’ to the music. He also enjoys the listening part.

How have classes helped your child to develop?

General confidence, enjoying music listening and reacting to what he hears.

Is there anything else that you would like to add about Music With Mummy sessions?

We have thoroughly enjoyed the sessions, they are very good value for money. I look forward to continuing them in September!
