Plans are progressing well for a brand new primary school at the former Fairfield Grammar School site in Montpelier.
Fairlawn School will open with up to 60 reception-class pupils in September 2015. It will be run by Colston’s Girls’ School Trust, which already runs CGS secondary and two co-educational primaries, The Dolphin School in Montpelier and The Kingfisher School in St Anne’s Park.
The trust says it has had very positive feedback from prospective parents and looks forward to meeting more of them at its next open event on December 10, from 3.30 – 6.30pm.
Governors are in the process of appointing a head teacher for the school, which will have breakfast and after-school clubs to help working parents.
The school will not have a catchment area. Like other schools, it will give priority for places to those children who live closest. It plans to work closely with families and the community, and to use the local environment as a focus for learning.
Colston’s Girls’ School Trust chairman Trevor Smallwood said:
“The Trust is delighted to be opening another school at the heart of the Montpelier community. Fairlawn School will be a welcome addition to our family of schools, helping meet the need for additional primary places in the inner city and adding to the diversity of provision.
“Our first open evening was well attended and families were very positive about our plans for the school, which will specialise in science, technology, engineering, art and maths (STEAM) subjects, with Spanish, music and PE also featuring strongly.
“We have started the recruitment process for our head teacher and look forward to welcoming our first 60 children in September, building to a school of 420 on the former Fairfield Grammar site by 2021.
“We believe all young people can succeed if they have access to exceptional education. As well as Colston’s Girls’ School, the Trust has two other primaries, The Kingfisher School and The Dolphin School, which has been rated Good by Ofsted just two years after opening. All our schools are committed to the values of responsibility, curiosity, resilience and respect.”
There will be a Fairlawn Open Day on Wednesday 7th January, from 3.30pm – 6.00pm, which will be at Colston’s Girls’ School Hall, Cheltenham Rd, Bristol BS6 5RD.
