The Latest News from Golden Hill Community Garden

The latest news from the Golden Hill Community Garden, from Lucy Mitchell, Community Project Worker…

Hi everyone,

We’ve been having a busy summer full of good work and great play and delicious veggies in the garden.

This is our best year yet for spinach and peas and after last year’s carrot-tastrophy (over carrots 2000 planted…only 8 carrots grown) we’ve back in the clover with two successful carrot beds.

Our first delicious sweetcorn was harvested last week, our plums are ready and our blueberries! Ooof! It’s definitely worth popping in to help just to get your hands on one of those sweet juicy blue gems!

And thanks to Pete’s careful attentions our melons are on the way 🙂

We’ve been busy with our fully booked famous five themed adventure days and last week’s family day was a joy of noodle sculpting, pizza making, tomato picking, music making and general garden good times.

Our next family adventure day is on 25th August.

We’ve currently got space next term’s 11.30am – 1pm Stay and Play Golden Buds sessions every Tuesday in term time for 18 months – school age children.

We sing, dig, water plants, play, explore the pond, learn about nature, eat snacks from the garden and enjoy the weathers!

It’s £5 a session, under 12 months are free and extra siblings £2.50. We take bookings by the term but you’re welcome along for a free taster session.

And if you like the idea of volunteering to help at our Golden Buds sessions – which is very fun and lovely – then get in touch.

AND our Harvest Fair is Saturday 9th September 1pm-4pm!

They’ll be music and a vegetable creature making competition, bring any spare veg or use ours, pond dipping, apple bobbing, giant games, facepainting, delicious cakes and pizza fresh from the oven.

They’ll be live music AND a quiz for cryptic minded grown ups!

We try to make our events as accessible as possible and they’ll be sensory play and a calm zone inside and our sensory trail and our fair fairy on hand for people who might need a bit more support.

As usual we’d LOVE some help please if you’ve some spare time to bake a cake or help out for an hour let me know! And if you know ANY musicians who might like to play or choirs that might sing – let me know!

We should soon have some exciting news about Sunday opening for volunteers so keep your eyes peeled for that!

And finally, as always, we’d love your help in the garden! We ALWAYS need more volunteers and everyone is welcome!

It doesn’t matter if have only a little time to give, no experience, knowledge or energy. You don’t need to come every week and you can come for just 30 mins or stay all day.

We are open every Wednesday 10am-4pm, feel free just to pop in for a look around and chat.

See you in the garden!

Lucy
