The run-up to Christmas is a busy, happy time at Joe’s Bakery in Bishopston.
The award-winning bakery which is at 240 – 242 Gloucester Road, one of the last few working bakeries in Bristol which freshly bakes all of the products it offers, has started to get busy behind the scenes preparing for its busiest time of the year!
I popped into Joe’s Bakery this week to talk to Jane Hunt who, along with her husband, has owned and managed the bakery for 27 of its impressive 130 years serving the local community.
Jane explained that in the 6-weeks run-up to Christmas, the bakery is a hive of activity with the bakers not only making their usual breads and cakes but also baking many festive treats!
This includes their famous mince pies (the best in the west), Christmas bread, German Stollen, Yule Logs, Cinnamon Stars, Panettone and of course, traditional Christmas Cake!
If that hasn’t got your taste buds going, here’s more…
Mince pies are available at Joe’s Bakery now, just out of the oven and approximately 22,000 mince pies will be made at Joe’s Bakery between now and Christmas!
A sweet pastry with a filling of top quality vegetarian mincemeat, as well as the traditional top, Joe’s also offer Viennese topped, crumble topped, or fondant iced topped mince pies!
Wholemeal mince pies will be available from mid-December.
Joe’s Bakery’s authentic German Stollen is made by its head baker, Wayne and the recipe was learned by Martin, joint owner of Joe’s Bakery, at the German National Bakery school, Akademie Weinheim.
Stollen is made from Fresh milk, fresh butter, fresh egg and dried fruits steeped in Kirsch, rum and brandy. The spices blend is from Germany and especially blended for Christmas stollen. It also includes a special Marzipan Core!
Stollen is best eaten when it is 1-3 weeks old, but will keep for longer.
Joe’s Bakery also makes a smaller version of stollen in spelt. This is made with wholemeal and white spelt flour. Honey and pure lemon oil give it a lovely flavour. The Curd stollen is made with soft cream cheese and made from a soda bread recipe which includes Italian candied peel, fresh butter and Californian raisins.
All three stollens have proved real favourites with the Bishopston community over the Christmas period.
Panettone is a traditional Italian long fermentation Christmas bread enriched with butter and eggs. The loaf contains organic orange and lemon peel from Italy and Californian raisins and is flavoured with a special blend of Citrus oils which include Oil of Bergamot.
These are made weekly up to Christmas and best eaten within 7 days of purchase.
As with all other products at Joe’s, Panettone is freshly made at the bakery rather than being mass-produced so is extra fresh and has a wonderful flavour.
Yule Logs are chocolate sponge roll with chocolate filling and chocolate flavour coating.
One of the many craft products created at Joe’s Bakery, this is best eaten within 7 days of purchase but can be left longer.
A favourite at Joe’s bakery, Christmas Bread is a delicious lightly spiced wheat and rye bread with raisins, sour cherries pistachio nuts, candied orange peel, hazelnuts, cranberries and orange zest.
It is beautifully soft eaten on the day with butter or equally good toasted over the next few days.
Joe’s Bakery offer Christmas cakes in 6” or 8” sizes, round or square, do pop into Joe’s Bakery to ask. But if you don’t want to buy a whole cake just to have a taste of it, this year Joe’s Bakery will be selling slices of it for you to enjoy. On the day I visited Joe’s Bakery, the fruit was being soaked!
