Summer News from The Old Library, Eastville

If you have not yet visited The Old Library, I promise you it’s definitely worth a visit!

Located on Muller Road, Eastville, it is open to the public on Wednesdays 10am-4pm and Fridays 12 noon- 4pm and offers books, café, computers, a Kids’ Corner and games.

The Old Library also regularly holds special events and activities for children and families!

Here’s the latest news from the library…

Hello neighbours and friends!

Well what a summer we have had so far, filled with plenty of scrummy Old Library food and new events, walks on South Purdown, robots and birds of prey and lots of getting together to grow our fantastic space!

So, what’s been happening and what’s coming up?

The Robots Arrived!
The end of June brought us UK Robotics Week, and with it, the arrival of a whole team of robots at the Old Library!

Thanks to the Bristol Robotics Lab and the volunteers running the Old Library, families, children and adults alike got a chance to get hands on in a range of robotics workshops, interacting, playing and learning about how robots could become part of our daily lives.

Our Wild Day & Birds of Prey!
On 27th July, we ran our first “Wild Day”, a Saturday filled with wildlife and outdoor based activities, which turned out to be our most successful Saturday cafe opening so far!

We welcomed back our wildlife friend, Steve England, for a Walk on the Wildside of South Purdown, alongside Paul from the Birds of Prey Discovery, wood crafts and bird box decorating with Read, Wild food additions to our meals and plenty of crafts and activities indoors and outdoors for everyone to enjoy!

And this Wednesday morning, Steve is returning for a Walk on the Wildside (booking essential) followed by some clay modelling and activities in the garden for everyone – come grab a coffee & get involved.

Freshen Up with Lloyds!
We had the Lloyds Bank Volunteers join us once more this year for a freshen up inside and outside of the Old Library.

Big thanks to Hazel and Lara for their organisation of the volunteers who repainted doors, railings, furniture and walls, along with stuffing lots of new cushions for our lounge space.

Our 3rd Anniversary – 21st September!
Can you believe this community has had the doors open to the Old Library for almost 3 years?! Of course, in good old fashioned Old Library style, we’re throwing another party!

Expect live music, tasty food, ciders and ales from our local breweries,  homemade cakes, Throw-a-Lightbulb, woodcrafts and campfire, our famous onion jousting, a Singing and Story time session with Rodney, flower headdress making, face painting and more!

We Need you to Get Involved
As always, the Old Library is a volunteer project for the community, by the community. The four strong events team has had some great offers of support and help so far, but we really need some more help with: Raffle prizes – can you, your company or contacts help out?

Music – We would love one or two more local musicians/bands to perform on the day – upbeat acoustic, folk, funk or other!

Cakes and salads – Can you donate a cake or side dish?

Volunteer on the day – Offer 2 hours to help the Old Library. We especially need a few extra hands for washing up, and tidying up from 6-7:30pm after the event has finished!

Spread the word – Share Facebook posts, let your neighbours know, add to your newsletter, pin up a poster!

Lets make this one the best party yet!

Last few things to know…
Don’t forget the Old Library “Not a Pub Quiz” night is coming up this Tuesday and every 2nd Tuesday of the month, alongside “Board at the Library” Board Game night, every 3rd Tuesday!

Keep up to date with everything that’s going on by visiting our website, our facebook page and in the Old Library itself.

Something you see needs doing or could be done better? Have a few hours to volunteer and want to join in with cooking, updating the noticeboard, organising fundraisers or serving teas?! Get in touch via our NEW EMAIL – HELLO@THEOLDLIBRARY.ORG.UK!

As always, a huge thanks to everyone who continues to support our community hub, for every donation made, cuppa bought, hour volunteered, social post shared or quiz night attended – what a super community we are.

Lots of community love,

Emily & Team Old Library
