I recently visited Horfield Dental Care with my little girl, a welcoming and family-friendly dental practice on 525 Gloucester Road in Horfield.
Horfield Dental Care has been a long-standing fixture on Gloucester Road, serving the local community for over 30 years. Several years ago was taken over by dentist, Phillip Chan and has since undergone extensive renovation. The practice offers an extensive range of treatments for all of the family, including infant and child dental care, plus cosmetic dentistry also.
A father of young children himself, Phillip understands completely how to put children at ease when they visit. He is warm and friendly and with his relaxed manner did a great job putting my little girl at ease in his bright and sunny treatment room, explaining to her how to brush her teeth well and making her laugh at the same time. He also rewarded her with a choice of stickers afterwards which she liked!
Phillip also offers great advice about how parents can approach a child’s first dentist visit, explaining that it is best not to make a big deal of a trip to the dentist and advises against using phrases such as “trying to be brave”. He also advises not to incentivise a trip to the dentist with the promise of a ‘treat’ at the end, as this can encourage children to think of going to the dentist in a negative light.
Phillip and the other dental staff at Horfield Dental Care always take the approach of taking time to build up a relationship with children who visit, going at a pace that they feel comfortable with and never rushing treatment.
Phillip explains: “In order to make a child feel comfortable at the dentist, it’s all about building up a relationship with them and getting them used to coming to the dentist. It’ also important to start them coming to the dentist as early as possible, not just for their own appointments but coming along to their parents and guardians’ appointments.”
Phillip also emphasises the importance of early education regarding dental care and talks to children about how to brush their teeth in the correct way at a level appropriate to their age and he also advises them about good things to eat as well as food to avoid!
As well as everyday dental care for children of all ages and adults, Horfield Dental Care also offers cosmetic treatment such as teeth whitening, cosmetic braces to straighten teeth, cosmetic bonding and dental veneers.
The practice also offers emergency dental treatment for children and adults, as well as treatment for crowns, dental implants, root canal treatment, mouth cancer screening and gum hygiene treatment.
What’s more, 2018 holds some exciting plans for Horfield Dental Care as its treatments will extend to facials, botox, fillers and more!
