My children and I have recently got into the good habit of regularly visiting the library. Although I love books and reading, our visits to the library were always sporadic as it our local library is a little too far for my kids to walk and therefore we have never really got into a good routine of regular trips there.
However, my children recently both started football classes on a Saturday morning and on the drive to every football class each week we have been popping into Henleaze Library along the way. Henleaze Library is on Northumbria Drive, Henleaze BS9 4HP.
I really like Henleaze Library. Aside from being the library that I went to when I was a child and having good memories for me, it is modern and bright, has a great kids reading area and very helpful staff.
Like most other libraries in Bristol, Henleaze Library holds FREE term-time activities for babies and pre-school age children. Baby Bounce & Rhyme is held on Thursdays at 2 – 2.30pm and there is also Pre-School Children’s Storytime, which also includes craft activities and is on Thursdays at 10.45 – 11.15am (read my review of Storytime here).
But while these sessions do stop over the Summer, I wanted to let you know about some Summer holiday activities at Henleaze Library especially for children.
First of all, from tomorrow (Saturday 12th July), at Henleaze Library and at libraries all over Bristol, the Summer Reading Challenge begins. This is a National event which is run by the charity The Reading Agency and runs every year, the aim being to encourage children aged 4 – 11 years to keep reading (or to be read to) over the Summer.
The theme this year is Mythical Maze, a fun fantasy adventure that encourages kids to discover more about legends and myths from all over the world. On signing up, children receive their Summer Reading Challenge pack with smelly stickers to put on a colourful chart. When kids have completed the challenge of reading 6 books over the Summer, they receive a certificate and medal!
All you need to do, is pop in to Henleaze Library or any library in Bristol and library staff will enrol your child.
If you have been slightly worried about finding things to do locally with your kids during the Summer, you will be pleased to know that there are three other great events being held at Henleaze Library:
