The sun is shining, the birds are singing and May is here! This month there are some really great events planned in and near Bishopston, all of which are thoroughly family-friendly.
There are lots of Spring Fairs, library celebrations, Jack in the Green will be making his annual appearance and lots more fun to be had!

Bishopston Library’s 1st Birthday Celebrations
On Thursday 3rd May, The Friends of Bishopston Library are holding a 1st Birthday party to celebrate the library’s first year of opening and all are invited!
There will be tea and cake from 11am – 12.30pm or 2.15 – 3.30pm and there will also be a small exhibition about the work of the library and FOBL one year on.
There will also be activities especially for children such as colouring and sticking to make banners to hang in the children’s section, plus singing and storytime.
The plan for the day is, unless it is pouring with rain, to gather outside the library about 5 minutes before opening, to sing and cut a cake.

Glos Rd Central Mayfest & Jack in the Green
On Saturday 5th May there will be a double whammy of family-friendly fun in the local area!
The Glos Rd Central Mayfest is an annual community event at which shops and businesses on the mid section of Gloucester Rd (top of Pigsty Hill) come together to offer creative activities, food and drink, face painting, tasters and charity and market stalls out on the wide pavements.
This event takes place from 10am – 4pm and is free entry.
On the same afternoon Jack in the Green and his band of merry musicians and dancers will pass by on their way from town centre to Horfield Common which is a really fun thing to see plus a great way to celebrate the start of summer!
Redland May Fair
On 7th May, Bank Holiday Monday, the Redland May Fair will take place on Redland Green from 1-5pm.
There will be many stalls to explore, delicious food to eat, plus children’s entertainment including fun and games with the irrepressible Sharky & George, storytelling, Fez the Jester will be on the loose (you can usually find him near the kids’ playground), building a cardboard city with the APE Project and much more!
You can find this event on Redland Green, BS6 7EH. This event is free entry and there’s always a great atmosphere.
Spring Fair at the Golden Hill Community Garden
Taking place on Saturday 12th May from 1-4pm, this event is always a good one and offers lots of gentle fun for children of all ages.
There will be Morris Dancers, pond dipping, live music, storytelling, plant sale, kids’ crafts, freshly baked pizza from the garden’s froggy pizza oven, a quiet sensory space and much more.
Entry is £1 for adults and kids go free.

Westbury-on-Trym Community Fair
This event on Saturday 12th May is slightly further than Bishopston but will be worth the visit as there’s lots on for kids!
Taking place from 11am – 3.30pm across Westbury-on-Trym’s Parish and Methodist churches, the village hall, car park area, this annual event promises to be bigger and better than ever before.
The fun includes face painting, a Teddy Abseil, arts and crafts, music, live entertainment, tombola, Tower tours, beautiful music, delicious food and much more.
There will also be a Carnival Procession of decorated Pushchairs and Wheelbarrows if you fancy taking part!
If so, meet at 10.15am at The Memorial Garden, Canford Lane (between Made in Bristol and Premier Homecare).
Jumble Sale at The Old Library
If you fancy picking up some quality bargains, come along to The Old Library on Saturday 12th May 11am – 3pm and come and have a rummage!
There will be clothes, homewares, kids toys, books, games, bric-a-brac, pre-loved and vintage gear and lots more treasures.
The café will be open serving hot and cold drinks, snacks, and savoury rolls – everything you spend goes towards the Old Library.
You can find The Old Library on Muller Road, Eastville, BS5 6XP. It is £1 entry.
The Old Library is great, plus very child-friendly – definitely worth an explore too!
Henleaze Infant & Junior School May Fair
This annual event on Saturday 12th May is always a fantastic one and brilliant for kids!
Taking place from 2-5pm, there will be maypole dancing, arts and crafts, games, stalls with books, toys and clothes, loads of delicious cakes and so much more.

Spring Fair at Bishopston Methodist Church
Saturday 12th May wil be a busy day for the local area as this is also the day that Bishopston Methodist Church are holding their annual Spring Fair!
The event takes place from 10.30am – 1pm and includes stalls offering books, toys, cakes, gifts and more.
